Dixie Lee Hamman, 86, of Yates Center, Kansas, passed away Monday morning, September 12, 2016, at Yates Center Health and Rehab.

She was born February 21, 1930, in rural Woodson County, the daughter of Floyd and Lydia (Ehrhardt) Edwards. She grew up on the farm south-east of Gridley, Kansas. She boarded with a family in Gridley and worked while she attended high school. She graduated from Gridley High School in 1948.

On March 12, 1949, she and Gerald Eugene “Gene” Hamman were married in Ottawa, Kansas. The lived in Strawn and Garnett, Kansas, before moving to California for two years. They then returned to Kansas and made their home in Yates Center. Dixie and Gene owned and operated the Dairy Queen and Gene’s Spot in Yates Center. Dixie worked at Smith Furniture and Funeral Home for a number of years. She also worked for Lawrence’s Flower Shop and as a bookkeeper for Steve Leis and Tom Davis in the oil business. She was later employed in the Woodson County Appraiser’s Office where she worked until she retired.

Dixie enjoyed sewing, gardening, and caring for her flowers. She and Gene enjoyed traveling around the country whenever they had the chance. She kept busy attending the activities of her grandchildren and volunteered to read to First Graders at Yates Center Elementary School.

She was a member of the Yates Center United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. She was a member of Golden Rod Chapter #163, Order of the Eastern Star, in Yates Center, and a 50 Year Member of White Rose Chapter #297, Order of the Eastern Star, in Gridley. She had also been a member of the Yates Center Lion’s Club.

Her husband, Gene, preceded her in death on May 19, 2001, following more than 52 years of marriage. She also was preceded by her parents; and her four sisters, Matilda Edwards, Melba Tindle and her husband Joe, Margaret Lance, and Anita Bagby.

She leaves her sons, Mike Hamman and wife Beth, Toronto, KS, and Kerry Hamman and wife Christy, Georgetown, TX; her daughters, Sheila Kostas and husband Jim, Shawnee, KS, and Kathe Hamman, Yates Center; nine grandchildren, Rachel Benjamin and husband Scott, Luther Hamman and wife Sherry, Reuben Hamman and wife Ali, Korry Hamman and wife Sarah, Kirra Strickland and husband Ben, Kathryn Hamman, Kerrt Hamman, Lauren Lobner and husband J.R., and Haley Kostas; fifteen great-grandchildren; brothers-in-law, Lyle Lance, Kenneth Bagby, and Connie Hamman; sisters-in-law, Tharon Harris and husband Lee, and Marian Hamman; numerous nieces and nephews; many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held 10:00 A.M. Saturday, September 17, 2016, at the Yates Center United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Askren Cemetery northwest of Yates Center.
