Dr. D. E. Shields, 82, died Sunday at 11 p. m. at Nabers' Clinic, after an illness of several weeks. Although failing health compelled him to retire about five years ago, he was actively engaged in the practice of Medicine and Surgery, in this section of the state for more than half a century. He was Surgeon for the Southern railway for a period of forty years.
He was actively identified with the American Medical Society; the East Tennessee Medical association, which he had served as president. He had also been president of the Hamblen County Medical Society many times during his long practice in Morristown.
Dr. Shields began his career as a Mason when a young man and during the years he had reached the top in Masonry, being a 32nd degree Mason. He was widely known throughout the state for his work in this fraternity.
No relatives nearer than nieces and nephews survive: Among this number are: Dr. R. S. Carroll, of Morristown; Dr. Curtis Haley, of Nashville; Mrs. Bessie Moore, Monta Vallo, Ala.; Paul Haley and Mrs. Nannette Haley Colman, of Jasper, Ala.; D. E. Shields, of Barrington, Ill.; Mrs. Maude Rosamand, of Chattanooga, Mrs. Lelia Shields Remine, of California; Mrs, Mary Shields Alley, of Knoxville, Mrs. George C. Taylor and Mrs. Lucy Shields Montgomery, of Birmingham, Ala.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2:30 p. m. at the First Methodist church, conducted by the Rev. L. M. Moneyhun, pastor of the Liberty Hill Methodist church, of which he was a member, assisted by the Rev. Fynes B. Jackson. Interment will be in Jarnagin cemetery with the Masonic fraternity in charge of the service at the grave."
