Elbert was the only child of David Hyrum Smith and Clara Charlotte Hartshorn. His father was the youngest son of the Mormon Prophet Joseph Smith. Baptized as a member of the RLDS Church on November 25, 1887 Smith became a noted author, scholar and leader in the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (now Community of Christ). He and Clara Cochran were married at Lamoni, Iowa on September 4, 1895 (she died in 1948). Elder Smith was ordained a priest in 1898 and an elder on May 6, 1900. On June 23, 1902 he was ordained a High Priest and called as a member of the Lamoni (Iowa) Stake High Council. He became a counselor in the RLDS First Presidency on April 20, 1909 and served in that capacity until being ordained as Presiding Patriarch on April 10, 1938. He resigned his patriarchal office in 1958.
