After Burt married Eva Webber in 1890, he worked for a while in the hardware business; later he farmed in Missouri, and mined in Sutter County, California. In the Fall of 1900, Burt, Eva and their five surviving sons moved to Columbia County, Oregon, where Evan was born in 1901. When Evan was three weeks old, Eva died leaving Burt with six sons (Chalmer, William, Robert, Vincent, Dorian and Evan), under 9-1/2 years of age. Burt married Nora Etta Maring, a childhood friend, in Portland, Oregon, on 13 June 1902. Zoe came along on 28 April 1903, her father's eighth child and only daughter, and her mother's only child. Burt worked hard to support his family, in Oregon he was employed at a rock quarry near the town of St. Helens, a logging camp at Scappoose, and on farms at Philomath and Alsea. Just when the family began to prosper, tragedy struck again.
On 8 January 1914, Burt who was 46 years, 9 months and 3 days old, suddenly dropped dead at the breakfast table with his entire family seated around him. He held a dish of potatoes in one hand and a spoon in the other. He died of apoplexy, doubtlessly caused by high blood pressure. Nora was widowed after less than 12 years of marriage. Somehow she and the boys were able to keep the family together. Burt had attempted to buy property in Central Oregon, but the owner refused to sell it to a widow.
