Robert Raynor Garey, 92, of Florence, passed away on Friday, September 9, 2016, after an illness. He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Alice Lee Harvie Garey.

Bob, son of the late George Alexander Garey and Ann Webb Garey, was born in Norfolk, Virginia, on January 24, 1924. At an early age, Bob and his family moved to Wilmington, North Carolina where he graduated from New Hanover High School in 1942, the school year that Pearl Harbor was bombed and the United States declared war against Japan and Germany. Bob enlisted in the Army Air Corps that school year when he reached 18 years old. A year later he graduated from Army Air Corps Flight School with a commission as a 2nd Lieutenant, with a pair of silver wings, and classification as a Fighter Pilot. Months of flight training continued until arriving in Hawaii and assignment to the 45th Fighter Squadron preparing to ship out to a combat area. The squadron shipped to Iwo Jima and arrived in the midst of the Marine’s month-long battle for the island. Once the island was secure and their planes brought in, they began their combat role. The squadron flew P-51 Mustangs primarily on missions escorting B-29s during their bombing raids over mainland Japan, and strafing air fields and other installations across Japan.

After the War, Bob returned home and enrolled in North Carolina State College (now University). He graduated with a degree in Chemical Engineering. Following graduation, he was hired by the DuPont Company as a chemical engineer and began his 35-year career with them. During the active DuPont years, Bob and his family moved several times, beginning with Richmond, Virginia; Wilmington, Delaware; back to Richmond; then Circleville, Ohio; and finally to Florence, South Carolina, where they remained after his retirement. For several years after retirement Bob established and was president of Robert R. Garey Associates, a worldwide industrial consulting firm, which remained active until 1998.

Bob was a member of St. John’s Church, where he served as a Vestryman and Junior and Senior Warden. He was a charter member of the Florence Golden “K” Kiwanis Club and a member of the Carolina Yacht Club in Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina.

Bob was preceded in death by his daughter, Ann Harvie Garey Correll, and his brother, George Alexander Garey, Jr.
