He was born December 7, 1907 at Friendsville, Tenn., and was a son of the late Horace Ashley "Ash" and Sarah Christina Angel Blackburn.
He was a sales representative for Bates and Klinke Inc. of Attleboro, Mass. and was a member of the United Methodist Church.
On September 18, 1965, he married the former Gladys Lorraine Buhl, who survives.
Also surviving are two children, Robert James Blackburn Jr., of Greenbelt, Md., and Mrs. Barbara Catherine Mauck of Enterprise, Ala., three grandchildren, and a sister, Mrs. Barbara Moore of Maryville, Tenn.
