Son of James and Roby (Blowers) Watson, Ernest came with his parents to Oak Harbor, Washington in 1870 and later to Coupeville. He clerked in a general store for fourteen years. He then served four years as Island County treasurer and then four years as Island county assessor. About 1903 he moved to Seattle were he worked as purser on a Puget Sound steamer. After that he was an inspector for paving work in the city.

His siblings were Percy E. Watson, Mrs. Blanche L. Freund and Norman Edwin Watson. On December 27, 1886 he was married to Nellie O. Lovejoy. They had one daughter, Mrs. Hazel McCarthy. All of these relatives survived him.
