In 1859, John appeared in the Indiana County Orphan’s Court and was assigned a guardian. While his siblings were all assigned to Robert Armstrong, John’s guardian was William Smith - one of his mother's cousins.
John enlisted in Co G, 63rd PA Infantry on 1 Aug 1861. His brothers and father served in the 84th. In his 1913 deposition, John also stated that he and his brothers had been separated at a young age, and he didn’t see them or his father again until he ran into them while on the march in Virginia. John fought at Chancellorsville and was in the Peach Orchard at Gettysburg. On 5 May 1864 at The Wilderness, he was wounded by a mini ball, which resulted in loss of his right arm below the elbow. After his recovery, he was discharged on 1 Aug 1864 and returned to Armstrong County.
In 1870, John is found in Plum Creek Township near Elderton, working as a school teacher. In about 1871, he married Christina Schrecengost (1850-1916), the daughter of Jacob and Catherine (Schrecengost) Schrecengost.
John purchased a farm in Atwood and spent the rest of his life there with Christine. They had three children together: Mary Etta, Homer Clark, and John Mark. John attended several reunions of his unit and travelled to Gettysburg for the 50th anniversary of the battle in 1913.
