He was a fisherman as a young man and into his thirties, up to the time of his marriage in 1891. He married Sile O'Donnell in St. Peter's Church, Dungloe. (Sile's name was pronounced "Sheila" and translated into English as Celia or Cecelia, sometimes Cecily. She was the daughter of Neil and Nancy O'Donnell of Innisfree Island.) After marriage Barney remained in Aphort and was more of a farmer but was also the coxswain for the Arranmore lifeboat.
Barney and Sile had 9 children:
