James Mackintosh was born on April 15, 1812, in Scotland. According to his death certificate his parents names were Alexander and Marjory; though no further information is known about them. He had four sons and two daughters with Louisa Hetherington between 1837 and 1857. He died on July 10, 1900 at his son, Dr. James Hetherington Mackintosh's home, in Asbury Park, New Jersey, having lived a long life of 88 years, and was buried in what is now Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Little is known about the life of James Mackintosh accept that he was a Provincial Land Surveyor and before coming to Canada he was doing what his son described as "Governement Work" in Derbyshire, England. He and Louisa Hetherington were married in October of 1836 in Inverness, Scotland.
