In 1931 Adelene and her family moved to a farm north of Herrick, South Dakota. She attended Carrol School #30 and graduated from Herrick High School in 1941. She then attended Southern State Normal and received her elementary education teaching certificate. Adelene taught rural country school for a few years.
Adelene married the love of her life Harold Pense on March 3, 1947. The made their home north of Bonesteel on the family farm until the government bought the farm for the Fort Randall Dam project. They then moved northeast of Herrick where they ranched from 1949 until 1984 when they sold the farm due to Harold’s poor health and moved to Burke.
Adelene and Harold raised four children:
Douglas, Dennis, Darlis and Daniel.
Adelene loved her family, cooking and baking – she made awesome pies, and bread - reading, the Statler Brothers, bells, light houses and her crossword puzzles. Addie enjoyed her Thursday visits at the GAB and loved to tell stories to anyone that would listen. She also loved the back deck and would sit out there and get “her tan”.
If her family didn’t keep her busy enough, Adelene also worked as a nurse’s aide and the Burke Hospital and later as a teacher’s aide at the Burke School. She loved her students and was so proud of all of them.
Adelene was a member of the Herrick Methodist Church, Herrick American Legion Auxiliary and the VFW Auxiliary.
Adelene was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Harold; her son Daniel; her sisters Phyllis, Ruth, Audrey and brother James; her brothers-in-law Merritt, Phil, Howard, and Wesley and sisters-in-law Hazel, Lyla, Etta, Mary, Donna and Darlene.
