Byron (Sonny) Dean Bointy, age 82, expired on Wednesday, August 31, 2016 in Oklahoma City following a lengthy illness. Byron was born in Lawton, OK on Aug. 12, 1934.
Byron spent his younger years on the family farm in Mt. View, OK. He attended a small country school; while his first grade teacher was his older sister Audrey Carter. Later, he attended a Catholic grade school in Lawton, OK. He graduated from St. Patrick’s High School in Anadarko, OK. He served in the Navy from 1953 – 1957. His favorite duty station was Hawaii. After discharge he attended Central State University in Edmond, OK and later transferred to the University of Oklahoma studying Liberal Arts. He worked Civil Service at Ft. Sill, OK and later went to work with the Federal Aviation Administration in Oklahoma City as an instructor and commuted back home to Lawton on the weekends. He retired from the FAA in 1989 and went on to work for a private contractor as an instructor at the FAA until 2009.
Byron enjoyed cooking, shopping, old blues and jazz music, his two cats Maggie and Bella, the Dallas Cowboys, and The Oklahoma Sooners along with traveling. He also enjoyed drawing caricatures of his children and wife which gave him great glee. A work assignment sent him to NYC, NY which became one of his loves. His stay in NYC, NY lasted 3 months. He later returned to New York City for a Christmas vacation with his wife where they took in several Broadway Shows and a carriage ride through Central Park. Another work assignment sent him to Copenhagen, Denmark where he longed to return there. Later his daughter played the game, “I bet I have seen something you have never seen before; a two story McDonalds” his reply was, “How about a McDonalds that serves Beer?” Byron won that game. Byron had a great love for his grandchildren especially his grand-sons. He was known for his high intellect and a wicked sense of humor. He recently purchased his childhood dream home but due to illness was unable to reside there.
Byron’s wife’s wish for her departed husband is that he rest in peace and know that she loves him and is sorry he didn’t get to see his 60th wedding anniversary which was Sept. 24.
