Lindsay Michelle Benton, born September 29, 1998, passed away Sunday August 28, 2016 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

Lindsay is survived by her father, Brad Benton of Leland, her mother, Kellie Barber Ekstrom of Wilmington, along with her step mother Kelli Anne Benton and step father Brett Ekstrom, as well as her loving brother Jarrett Benton. She is also survived by her grandparents Bernard Benton of Whiteville, Nan Benton of Leland and Ron and Linda Barber of Wilmington. She will be missed dearly by her Aunts, Uncles and cousins who were blessed by knowing and loving Lindsay.

Lindsay was a rising senior at Wilmington Christian Academy and recently stated that is was her dream to become a trauma surgeon. Being a goal oriented, driven student there is no doubt that this dream would have become a reality. She has a passion for people and their well being. She wanted to save lives and in the end, that is what she did. Lindsay made the conscience decision at the age of 16 to become an organ donor. As such, she was able, by her own sacrifice and gifts, to save multiple lives.

A public visitation is scheduled for Thursday September 1st 6:00-8:00 PM at Northside Baptist Church. A celebration of Lindsay’s life is scheduled for 2pm on Friday, September 2nd, also at Northside Baptist Church. The Reverends Kenny Chinn and Chris Wroten will be officiating. Internment will follow at the Oleander Memorial Gardens.
Ms. Benton, age 17, passed away from injuries she sustained in a car crash last week.

She was the daughter of Brad Benton and Kellie Barber Ekstrom.

She leaves behind her mother and stepfather as well as her father and stepmother.

She was a student at the Wilmington Christian Academy. She was a rising senior and co-captain of the school's varsity cheerleading team.

She had a calling to be a doctor. Though she was not able to accomplish that goal, she still managed to save lives. She donated her organs to four people in need of transplants.

Her left kidney ended up going to a family friend, while her right kidney and liver were given to other patients. All three organs were transplanted successfully and have been accepted. Her corneas are also set to be transplanted.

"We thought she’d be doing it as a doctor, we never realized she’d be doing it like this. But in actuality, she did exactly what she set out to do," said Ms. Benton's stepmother. (StarNews Online).

“It’s amazing to me that even through this tragedy that the lord is using her to save lives." It may not be the way that we thought and how she thought her life was going to go, but her goals are still being accomplished.” (This from her coach per WECT News).

Ms. Benton was in a car accident outside the Compass Pointe community in Leland on August 21, the day before classes started at Wilmington Christian Academy. She passed away in the hospital.

She was a vital member of last year's National Championship cheerleading team for WCA.

Ms. Benton has been a part of the WCA family since she was four years old. She was one of 35 seniors set to graduate in 2017. Students signed a banner in her memory during school on Monday.

She was passionate about helping people. She worked part time at Leland Christian Academy in the daycare center and was set to become a Hospice volunteer in the coming weeks.
