Jean McCutchen Steakley, 93, of Waco, passed away Tuesday, August 30, 2016.
A private memorial service, officiated by Rev. Leslie Murphy King, will be held at the home of her daughter, Frances Martin.
A private burial will be later at Sparkman Hillcrest Memorial Park in Dallas, Texas where she will be laid to rest alongside her parents, grandparents, sister, aunts and uncles.
Jean was born November 1, 1922, in Louisville, Kentucky. She was the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Lyndon Lee McCutchen, who had served as a Presbyterian minister from 1918 until his death at age 92.
Her family moved to Dallas one year after her birth. She spent her childhood in Dallas, but then moved to Sherman, Texas, at age 15. She attended Sherman High School and Austin College, and married Robert Wilson Steakley on July 17, 1941. They moved to Denison, Texas, and on to Durant, Oklahoma.
After the death of her father-in-law, Robert Wilson Steakley, Sr. the family moved to Cleburne, Texas, for the Chevrolet dealership to be owned and operated by Mr. Steakley and his brother, John Steakley.
In 1960, the family made their permanent home in Waco, Texas, when Mr. Steakley bought Waco Chevrolet. Jean had been a member of First Presbyterian Church of Waco since 1972.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Mary McCutchen; and a brother-in-law, Lambert Steakley.
Jean is survived by her three children, R.W. Steakley III, Jeanie German and Frances Martin; eight grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
She was the most loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was always involved and interested in their lives.
Mother, Grandmommy, we will always miss and love you and remember what a wonderful inspiration you were for us all.
The family desires memorial donations be made to First Presbyterian Church at 1100 Austin Ave., Waco, Texas 76701 or the Presbyterian Children’s Home in Itasca, Texas, or Fuzzy Friends in Waco.
