Paul W. “Muggsy” Murgolo, 92, of Springfield died Monday, August 29, 2016 at Mercy Medical Center. Paul son of the late Vincenzio and Harriette (Smith) Murgolo was born in Somers, CT on April 28, 1924. Raised in East Longmeadow he graduated from Springfield Trade High School. Paul was a firefighter for the Springfield Fire Department for 35 years and retired in 1977. He served his country during WWII with the United States Marines. Paul saw action in the Asiatic Pacific area of Mindoro and Mindano and he also participated in Luzon and the Southern Philippine Islands Operations. He resided in Springfield most of his life and was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church. Paul was a member and past president of the Springfield Fire Fighters Privates Club. He was also a member of Knights of Columbus Council 160 of Indian Orchard, Wakefield Rhode Island Elks, VFW Post 7352 of Forest Park and the American Legion Post 420 of East Springfield. Paul lived life to the fullest. He loved socializing and meeting new people at his favorite spots about town. He was an avid camper and beach-goer spending his retirement years in Wakefield Rhode Island. In addition to his parents, Paul was predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Evelyn R. (Spencer) Murgolo who died August 30, 2009, a son, Robert Murgolo, a son-in-law, Peter C, Bourque, and his beloved best friend and loyal companion his dog Abner. He is survived by a son, James Murgolo and his wife Colleen of Springfield, three daughters, Mary E. Larrivee and her husband Joseph of West Springfield, Harriet Bourque-Bove and her husband Richard of Rutland, VT, and Peg Daoust and her husband Gary of Springfield; 12 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Visiting hours for Paul will be held on Thursday, September 1, 2016 from 4 to 7 pm at Sampson’s, Chapel of the Acres Funeral Home, 21 Tinkham Road, Springfield. His funeral will be Friday, September 2, 2016 at 8:15 am at Sampson’s followed by the Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 am in Sacred Heart Church, 395 Chestnut Street, Springfield. Rites of Committal and Interment with Military Honors will follow in St. Michael’s Cemetery, 1601 State Street, Springfield. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions in Paul’s memory may be made to the T.J. O’Connor Animal Control and Adoption Center, 627 Cottage Street, Springfield, MA 01119.
