Charles Phillips was the son of John Edward and Elizabeth Phillips from Sullivan County, Tennessee. He married Lucy Malone prior to leaving Sullivan County since they are found on the 1870 census there, but moved to Hardeman County, Tennessee prior to the 1880 census. Lucy died after the birth of their youngest child, Lola Ann “Loly” but before the 1900 census when Charles is enumerated as a widow. It is believed by family that she is buried at Bethany, but there is no proof nor is there a headstone. Charles died November 7, 1928 after receiving injuries in a fall and according to his death certificate is buried at Bethany.
