Abraham Freel Rolston was born August 14, 1853 in Wood County, Virginia (now West Virginia) the eldest of two children born to David Compton Rolston and Eliza E. Ingraham. Abraham was named after his maternal grandfather, Abraham Freel Ingram, whose mother was Catherine Nancy Freel. Abraham was little more than two or three years old when his father left the family behind to seek his fortunes in California. His father died in 1872 in California, but the family may not have known of his death. His mother remarried but did not have children from her second union. Sometime after the 1870 census, Abraham set out on his own, ending up in Minnesota.

Abraham, 28, died of Typhoid Fever on April 13, 1882 in Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota, and was buried in the Minneapolis Pioneers and Soldiers Memorial Cemetery in Minneapolis. The grave is no longer marked.

Although he died in Minnesota, Abraham's death was recorded in Wood County, West Virginia. According to his death record, Abraham was married at the time of his death. Abraham was not mentioned in the will of his paternal grandfather, Nathan Rolston, as the will was written in June of 1884 some two years after Abraham's death. No children from Abraham were mentioned in the Nathan's will, and it is presumed that none existed at the time of his death.
