Despina was born in Egypt to Greek parents and the family emigrated to South Africa when she was 32. She married Mariano Giuseppe Di Maggio and they had two sons (Mario and Michael). Mario emigrated to the UK in 2000, settled in Armagh and brought his parents over soon after. Despina lived happily in the new family home in Armagh until her passing.
