Professor Dennis M. Finn taught at Mountain Spring Academy, a boy's school near Herd's Gap north of Sylacauga, and was buried at the Taylor family cemetery at Mountain Spring, according to Carolyn Luttrell. Also called the Mountain Spring Cemetery, Taylor-Bledsoe Cemetery or Cook Place Cemetery as it is now called. These were actually two burial grounds, the Taylor family plot being a separate little cemetery on the Taylor property adjoining. (The Carolyn Luttrell Collection is at the B.B. Comer Memorial Library, Sylacauga.)

Dennis M. Finn was said to have been born in County Cork, Ireland.
The 1840 and 1850 censuses show him as Daniel W. Finn, and according to the 1850 census he was born c1823 in Ireland. Probate records give his name as Dennis M., and the name Dennis is handed down through descendants as well.

"Professor Finn," as he was called, married Eveline Funderburg, a first cousin of Capt. John Oden of Odena whose first cousin was Capt. Henry Penn Oden of Mountain Spring.

Mountain Spring is inside Sylacauga's northern city limits today, on the Talladega highway. It was a boarding school for boys about a quarter mile north of the Oden-Bledsoe-Kelly house built in 1842. Another teacher at the academy was Francis Marion Bledsoe, father of Leona Bledsoe Kelly and grandfather of Maud McLure Kelly. About 1864 he bought Capt. Henry Penn Oden's home nearby and called it Mountain Spring, as the home is listed in the Historic American Buildings Survey of 1935, Alabama's Tapestry of Historic Places (1978) by the Alabama Historical Commission, and other references.

Carolyn Lane (Mrs. J. Oden) Luttrell had information on Mountain Spring Academy and Professor Finn as well as genealogical records of the Finn, Funderburg/Funderburk, and Oden families in her records, which were donated to the Sylacauga library when she died.
Capt. Henry Oden was a first cousin of Capt. John Oden, the grandfather of Mrs. Luttrell's husband, and Capt. John Oden was a first cousin of Dennis Finn's wife Eveline Funderburg Finn.
