VETERAN ANSWERS SUMMONS - Eli M. Hickman was born in Hamilton County, IN, on April 18, 1843 and passed away at his home near Whitten on Aug 15, 1914, aged 71y 3mo and 27das. When a child he moved with his parents to Henry County, IA, and later to Hardin County. Sep 5, 1862, he enlisted in Co.B 11th Regiment and was honorably discharged on June 2, 1865. Dec 8(sic), 1867, he was united in marriage to Maria Harris and to this union 7 children were born, all of whom are living and were at the bedside of the father when death came. Mr. Hickman is survived by his faithful wife; 2 daughters, Mrs Isaac Barron of Mayward, MN and Miss Maggie Hickman, at home; 5 sons, Fred of Eldora, Loten of Mt.Etna, Theodore of Ackley, Sherman of Fairmont, MN, and Glen who resides on the home place. One brother Henry Hickman of Union, one sister, Mrs Lovina Marsh of Mt. Etna; 17 grandchildren and a host of friends. Mr. Hickman was a faithful member of the Church of Christ. He bore his suffering with great patience, and expressed a desire to be at rest. The funeral services were held at the home Sunday, conducted by Rev.E.D.Curless. [list of pallbearers]. Interment was in the Benson cemetery.
