A. A. Mauney was born in Lincoln Co. N. C., the son of John Lawson and Lavinia Norman Mauney. He served in the Confederate Army, was taken prisoner in Ohio, escaped, and walked home to N.C. In 1866, he married Mary Jane Borders Elliott, and they were the parents of eight children. They lived in the Elizabeth community of Cleveland Co., N. C. where he was a farmer, merchant, and tavern owner.
