Oliver B. Redden, M.D., age 97, at North Hill in Needham, on June 10th following a long illness. Beloved husband of Carol I. Redden. Devoted father of Kenneth O. Redden and his wife Wanda of Grafton, Alan G. Redden of Natick, Linda A. Davis of Basalt, CO, Kathryn D. Cadigan and her husband Timothy of Barrington, RI, and Charles F. Davis, Jr. and his wife Beth of Deerfield. Also survived by five grandsons, Benjamin Redden, Kevin Cadigan, and Bradley, Brian, and Zachary Davis. He is also survived by a nephew, Douglas Roberts and his wife Elise of Boothbay Harbor, Maine and their two sons. He was predeceased by his first wife Lois Small Redden.
Oliver was born in Somerville, Massachusetts on February 14, 1919, the only child of Alice (Oliver) and Ben Redden. After graduating from Somerville High School, he attended Tufts University for two years and in his spare time played drums with several well-known dance bands around Boston. He then moved to Missouri to finish his medical training at the Kansas City College of Physicians and Surgeons. After obtaining his M.D. degree and serving in the 23rd Infantry Medical Detachment at Camp Edwards, he practiced medicine part-time for the City of Boston from 1949-1953. He married Lois Small in 1949, moved to Needham, and subsequently specialized in Family Practice medicine with an office in his house on Great Plain Avenue. He and Lois welcomed two sons: Kenneth, now living in Grafton, and Alan, of Natick. He served on the staffs of three Boston hospitals during the 1970's and was named President of the Glover Memorial Hospital Medical Staff in 1984 and served on the Board of Trustees. He retired from GMH (now Beth Israel Deaconess-Needham) in 1986 but continued working at the former Lakeville Rehabilitation Hospital until fully retiring in 1991.
Following the death of his first wife Lois in 1986, he married the former Carol I. Davis of Weston in January of 1992 and moved to Wayland, where they lived for ten years and enjoyed traveling and spending winters in Naples, Florida. Oliver's interests included sailing in the area around Boothbay Harbor where he owned a cottage, music, reading, gardening, and tennis. In 2002 he and his wife moved to North Hill in Needham, becoming active residents and participating in various musical events where Oliver excelled as a drummer. He was a member of the Wellesley Hills Congregational Church, the Massachusetts Medical Society, and the Needham Retired Men's Glee Club and a lifetime member of the Norfolk Masonic Lodge, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, and Shriners International. He will be remembered for being always a gentleman, a caring physician, his ability to make one laugh, and his never-failing good-natured personality. The family would like to especially thank David Makumbi and the rest of the North Hill staff at Pines Edge for their devoted care over nine years.
A memorial service will be held at the Wellesley Hills Congregational Church, 207 Washington Street, Wellesley Hills on Friday, June 17th at 2:00 p.m. Visiting hours will take place at Eaton Funeral Home,1351 Highland Avenue, Needham from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 16th.
