Uncle Joe, as he was known later, was the son of John Durrett and his wife, Sarah W. Murrell. Both John and Sarah were born in Virginia and, by the time the 1850 Lawrence Co., Tennessee census was enumerated, had migrated to Lawrence County via Kentucky.
In 1861, Joseph enlisted in the Conderate Army, serving in C. Co., 32nd. Tennessee Infantry Regiment. He was captured at Fort Donaldson in 1862 and, a few months later, paroled in Vicksburg, Mississippi.
Louisie and Joe were the parents of nine children, all born in Lawrence Co., Tennessee. They were raised in the Fall River area of Lawrence County where Joe was a farmer.
