Both of her parents died when she was a young girl. She was apprenticed (adopted) to David Maggard and his wife Margaret Mauck. A copy of the document for this apprenticeship is posted on this page. It shows that David agreed to give Mary "8 pounds, 10 shillings, and a new spinning wheel," and to "teach her to read and write when she came of age." That was how her last name became Hoffman-Maggard.

This has been documented in many records, including a book called, "Hans Maggard's Other Son: A History and Genealogy of the David Maggard Family," by Mary Kay Hushman Lavezzari.

Mary later married one of David's sons, Jacob Maggard, on March 26, 1787, in Culpeper County, VA. The minister was William Mason, a Baptist (Culpeper Marriage Book #1, p.66).

Mary and Jacob had at least five children: Adam D. (born 4-27-1789), Moses (born 1796), Elizabeth (born 4-13-1797), Joel (born 5-28-1801), and Samuel Daniel (born 1805).

They left Virginia and migrated to Champaign County, Ohio, around 1810, with the Judy family and the Comer family. They bought land in Johnson Township, on May 5, 1815.

Mary died sometime between 1830 and 1840.
