Obituary, Dec. 2010, Cape Gazette, Lewes, DE.
------------------------------------
Robert Travis Martin, Sr., Navy veteran
Robert Bob Travis Martin Sr. passed Monday, Dec, 27, 2010, after an 18-year battle with cancer. He was a resident of Lewes.
Born in Prospect Park. Pa., he attended Prospect Park High School; as a junior he was a nine-letter athlete, strong student and a member of the National Honor Society. Bob left high school to attend The Hill School on a full scholarship. He then headed for the Naval Academy - his lifelong ambition. As a member of the Naval Academy class of 1954, Martin was a member of the track and football squads, the French Club and the Ring Committee.
After graduation Bob had a brief but outstanding Navy career. His first assignment was to the Academy Executive Department, then he boarded the USS Vermilion. Bobs career led him as a Junior Ensign to navigating the USS Vermilion (steaming independently) to the North of Hall Lake, Canada. While in the Arctic, Bob was conscripted to lead an international murder investigation aboard a sister ship. Later as a Lt.jg Bob was assigned as the chief engineer of the Vermilion. This brief span, of exceptional responsibility led Bob to a fast track and early promotion to lieutenant.
After resignation Bob held positions at The Englehard Industries and The General Electric Co. (GE). At GE he held executive positions focusing on special programs. Bob then moved to a senior position with Ford Aerospace, Western Development Laboratories. His last position was vice president in Ford Aerospace's
Washington office. Retiring to Canaan Valley, W.Va., Bob and his wife started a third career in art, specializing in very large self-generated scenes of mountains, seascapes and flowers. Cancer interrupted his plans to remain in West Virginia.
The Naval Academy was a continuing part of Bob's life. He was a trustee of The Naval Academy Foundation for 37 years. Most of those years Bob was a member of the foundation's executive committee. At retirement he was bestowed emeritus status. Other retirement activities included president of the Sussex County Arts Council and a staunch fan of Navy football. Bob's only problem was when Navy played the Air Force (the Air Force Academy head coach was Bobs predeceased brother, Ben Martin 46).
Family and friends were most important to Bob. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Pamelia Dannemann Martin; son Robert Travis Martin Jr. of Durban, South Africa; daughter, Janice Martin-Herbert and her husband Camille Hebert of Canonsburg, Pa.; a sister, Doris Clark of Wallingford. Pa.; and three grandchildren, Joseph Ambrose III, Meredith Ambrose and Robert Travis Martin III.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, Jan. 3, at St. Peters Episcopal Church. Second and Market streets, Lewes. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions in Bob's name to the United States Naval Academy Foundation, 25 Maryland Ave., Annapolis, MD 21401.
