She was born on October 26, 1913, in Gallatin County, Kentucky, the daughter of Milton Lee and Inda Darneille Hance. Doris was a elementary school teacher beginning just after her 18th birthday in a one-room schoolhouse at Jackson's Landing, Kentucky. After World War II, she and her husband, Clinton, moved to Clarksville where she taught in Borden and Clarksville schools before finally teaching twenty years at McCulloch Elementary School in Clarksville. She was a more than sixty year member of the Howard Park Christian Church in Clarksville. She was a more than 50 year member of Phi Beta Psi Sorority and loved working in that group's fund raising efforts for cancer research. Doris completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Louisville in her early 40s while holding a full time job, keeping house and raising two children. She loved reading, her church, and staying in touch with her extended family.
Doris was preceded in death by her husband, Clinton V. Vaught, her son, Clinton (Buzzy) Vaught, Jr., seven sisters and a brother. Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Lynn Lewis (Ray), her daughter-in-law, Phyllis Vaught, her granddaughter, Aura Vaught, and a host of relatives and friends.
Special thanks go to Ruby Choate and to Tom Lawson whose loving care allowed Doris to remain in her home until her passing and to Corrie Weldon for her loving care. The family is indebted to Bob Werner and the staff of Hosparus of Southern Indiana for their kind and attentive care in the last year of Doris' life.
Visitation will be held from 10:00 to 11:30 on Wednesday, August 17, at Chapman Funeral Home, 431 W. Harrison Avenue in Clarksville. A funeral service will be held at 11:30 with burial following at Kraft Graceland Memorial Park.
Expressions of sympathy may be sent to her church: Howard Park Christian Church, 450 Norwood Avenue, Clarksville, Indiana 47129 or to Hosparus of Southern Indiana, 502 Hausfeldt Lane, New Albany, IN 47150. Online condolences may be sent via www.chapmanfuneralhome.net.
On the occasion of her 100th birthday Doris wrote an extensive article about growing up in Gallatin County which was kindly published by the Gallatin County News. She noted in the article that though she lived in Indiana for the last 70 years of her life Gallatin County would always be her home.
