"Mr. and Mrs. F. M. Simmons at Puyallup Sunday threw open their home for an old fashioned celebration of their 40th wedding anniversary and the 73rd birthday anniversary of Mr. Simmons. He is the oldest pioneer in this section, having come to the state with his father when but four years of age. They settled on Cowlitz prairie. His father built the first saw and grist mill and owned the first steamboat on Puget Sound making trips to San Francisco. Mrs. Simmons, who for years has been a newspaper correspondent at Puyallup, is a native of Oregon City. She is an aunt of Mrs. George Milton Savage of Tacoma. Her husband was prominent in the early Indian wars this section, volunteering at fighting in many of the important battles in 1865-66. Over 150 persons visited the home yesterday bringing many presents. A big dinner was served to guests in the afternoon."
