Fleming Saunders "Bud" Hairston was born September 21, 1849, to Samuel Saunders Hairston and Elizabeth Perkins Hairston. In about 1875, he married Miss Janie E. Evans of Pickensville, Alabama. (She had been attending finishing school in Columbus, Mississippi). She was the daughter of Norman Evans and Jane Adams Evans of Pickensville, Alabama.

By 1880, Bud & Janie Hairston were living in Marion County, Florida.

Together, Bud and Janie were the parents of four children -- Norman Love Hairston (born 1876), Henry Evans Hairston (born 1878 and died as a child), Oscar Evans Hairston (born 1880) and Pearl C. Hairston Haynes (born 1882).

Fleming Saunders Hairston died in 1882, and his widow, Janie Evans Hairston returned to Winston County, Mississippi with the children. She was photographed circa 1883 wearing the garb associated with a widow. In February 1884, she married Emmett Clearman.
