Hot Springs NM age: 25yrs Wife of Major Pfeiffer. Killed by Apache Indians

In 1856, Henry Pfeiffer met the widow Maria Antonia Salinas Lujan, with her small son, Jose. Pfeiffer took to the young child as well as Maria Lujan and the happy trio was seen all around Santa Fe. After a brief courtship they were married in a civil ceremony as he would not give up his Lutheran religion and embrace her Catholic beliefs. Henry Jr. was born on 07 Oct 1857. On 28 Jul 1860 they were married again. This time in the Catholic church where Pfeiffer had accepted his new religion.

Abandoned on 30 Oct 1876 and turned over to the Interior Department 22 Jul 1884. The fort is now covered by Elephant Butte lake. Interments buried at Fort McRae Cemetery were relocated to National, State, public or private cemeteries.
