For the wife of Thomas Briggs, Lora LaMance in her genealogy of the Greene family provides the name of Mary Greene, born 1726. However, in my opinion this is incorrect, as Benjamin and Eleanor (Randall) Greene had a subsequent daughter named Mary indicating the one born in 1726 has died. This second Mary was born too late to bear the children of Thomas.

In 1775, an E.Greenwich, RI deed (Land deeds 9:318) was recorded showing the name of Thomas' wife as "Dinah". Since the name of the mother is left blank in all of their children's birth records in the E. Greenwich, RI VRs, it is unknown whether she is the mother of none, some, or all of his children.

For clarification, this memorial will be for the wife of Thomas Briggs, named Dinah, who emigrated with him from RI to NY.

My theory - The names Carey, Clark, and Dinah are frequently passed along to subsequent generations (vice Benjamin or Eleanor etc). There was a Caleb Clark who married a Dinah Green (thus a Green connection that LaMance referred to) and had a daughter born March 31, 1726 in North Kingstown (record damaged by fire). Their son Carey Clarke was Thomas Briggs' neighbor in Stephentown, NY.

Perhaps, Dinah, the wife of Thomas Briggs is possibly Dinah Clark, born 31 March 1726, North Kingstown, RI, daughter of Caleb Clark and Dinah Green, and emigrated from RI to NY and lived next door to her brother. During LaMance's research, I do not think its too out of line for his wife to have been proudly referred to as a "Greene" by relatives, when it was her mother's last name. I know first hand how best intentioned recollections can get a little mixed up, especially nearly 100 years after the fact. I think LaMance found a birth record and made it work.

With such little primary evidence to support a definite conclusion, I welcome all discussion on this topic.

There is also no record that she or her husband Thomas Briggs are buried in this cemetery.
