Patriarch of the Book Family Farm, beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend passed away at home in Durham with his family by his side, July 30, 2016 at age 90.

Jim was born January 21, 1926 in Glendale, California to Lawrence and Lillian Book. He graduated from Chico High in 1944, served in the Army Air Corps from 1944-46 and graduated from John Brown University in Siloam Springs, Arkansas in 1950 with an Electrical Engineering Degree.

At JBU he met and married his wife of 57 years, Bea. After graduation, Jim and Bea moved back to the family home in Chico where he taught for two years at Chico High. He then spent the next 30 years working for Bell Telephone/AT&T. Upon retirement, having earned his master's degree in psychology from the Univ. of San Francisco in 1979, he served as a counselor with Enloe Stress & Health for 15 years and taught the tools of relaxation for stress and pain control.

Jim served on numerous boards over his life, including Shasta Union School and RAD. He was an active member of Bidwell Presbyterian (1950-55), Grace Brethren (1955-60), Evangelical Free (1960-present) as well as participating in new start up worship with Valley Community and Matthew's Café. He loved music, sang in the choir, served as advisor and friend to pastors and was a committed mentor to colleagues.

In 1982 Jim planted some pumpkins for his wife's school, Little People Nursery and Kindergarten and the Pumpkin Patch was born. As it grew, Jim and Bea moved with their families to a larger farm in Durham where he loved to tell stories of farming to thousands of children and parents visiting the Book Family Farm. The Farm was his life in later years. He watched his grandchildren grow up and welcome husbands, wives, and great-grandkids in to the family.

"Grandpa", as he was known by all, kept active, mowed all the yards and he, along with his dog, traveled around the farm to check on livestock, share meals with family and keep tabs on what all of his children, grandchildren and great- grandchildren were doing. Jim frequently shared that he loved all that God had provided. Jim leaves behind his sons Bruce (wife Linda) and Keith (wife Joy) and daughter Lillian (husband Dan), grandchildren Nattie, Molly, Leah, Katie, Reed, Stacy, Lauren, Amy, Lindsay, Lawrence and Brian and great-grandchildren Dana, Lacey, Sabrina, Jack, Eliana, Emma, Amryn, Owen, Cody and Lydia.

Jim is also survived by sister Lavenia Black and her family. Son John Mark, daughter-in-law Gail and wife Bea preceded Jim in death. A memorial service and celebration of Jim's life will be Saturday, Aug. 20th at 10:00 am, at Evangelical Free Church in Chico. You may share your thoughts and memories of Jim online at NewtonBracewell.com. In lieu of flowers the family asks that gifts in his honor be made to Northern California Alzheimer's Association.
