MICHIGAN EARLY SETTLERS

A Jolly Gathering of Branch County Old Folks of Union City - What they said and How they Behaved - The Annual Meeting of the Calhoun County Pioneers - Their Narration of Early Adventures and Hardships
..........See, we are going to have some music, for Mrs. M. Alden Harris is seated at the organ. What a fine tune it has!....Oh!Oh! the old lady with the white cap, Mrs. Twiss is singing too!.....- Coldwater and Union forever! Mrs. Twiss' voice is strong enough to be heard distinctly. She sings with great calmness and sweetness and that too, at the advanced age of 87. She is invited to sing a solo, Mr. J. Chandler accompanying with the organ. She is quite the charm and delight of all ears and eyes......
Mr. Leonard made some very interesting remarks; "One year, on the 4th of July, the Sabbath Schools held a celebration, coming from Coldwater to Union City - 700 persons had dinner. It was a very pleasant occassion. Mrs. Twiss, the old lady in the white cap, and widow of Rev. Twiss, came to Union City 33 years ago, and went to living in a shanty which was so full she could not get all her furniture in it. They had sewing circles for the religious societies. One was quite a distance from her home, and she wanted to go, but had no way and got a chance to ride on a saw - log. She made an acquaintance she shall always remember, and loves to turn back to these incidents when the county was new.
