Pearl Harbor Survivor and WWII Navy Veteran Norman Lee Vance 95, of Rush County, Indiana, passed away August 8, 2016. Norman was born August 1, 1921 in New Castle, Indiana, the son of the late Harold Arnold & Lida Florence (Peyton) Vance. He attended New Castle High School and was the first freshman in school history to letter in varsity track. After high school, Norman enlisted in the US Navy in 1940. While attached to the USS Pennsylvania BB38, he was stationed at Pearl Harbor when WWII started. He was a Pearl Harbor survivor. Later he was transferred to the USS Columbia CI 56. He was awarded many WWII ribbons and 11 battle stars. During the war, Norman married Mary E. Henshaw May 4, 1944, she would precede him in death March 13, 1996. After being discharged, he was a manager at Carter-Lanning Paint Store where he retired from after 45 years. He played guitar with the Carter Lanning Band for several decades and was a self taught musician. Those left to cherish his memory include his son Stephen (Gerrianne) Vance, of Anderson, IN; five grand children, thirteen great-grandchildren; a niece Rhonda Matthews and his special friend Marjorie Wesley and family who assisted as caregivers for him. In addition to his parents and spouse, Norman was preceded in death by a daughter Kathy Abell and a sister, Margaret J. Boyer. A Celebration of Life with Military Honors will be held at 1:00 PM Thursday, Aug. 11, 2016 at Todd Funeral Centre & Crematory with Tony Ausburger officiating. Friends may call the day of visitation from 11 AM until the time of service Burial will follow at Arlington East Hill Cemetery in Arlington, IN. Memorial contributions may be made to the Raleigh Community Center.
