Josephine Anne Sample was born on October 18 1933 to Frank and Jennie (Pagano) De Phillips.

She attended St. Joseph Academy, East High School and the Iowa School of Beauty.

She married Donald Armstrong, Sr. and together they had five children.

She later married Richard "Sam" Sample in 1973 and added two more daughters.

JoAnne and Sam were generators of two family owned businesses, Sample "R" Greenhouse and Sample Concessions. Their concessions could be found at festivals and fairs around Iowa, especially the Iowa State Fair. Their stands included the Watermelon Stand, Karla's Korner and Jennie's Original State Fair Guinea Grinder which served the State Fair for over 60 years.

JoAnne took people under her wing and enjoyed helping others including the sponsorship of an Indian child.

She enjoyed hosting school field trips at her farm and greenhouses.

She loved the "Meadows", Bingo and family gatherings.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Donald Armstrong, Sr.; her second husband, Richard "Sam" Sample; two children, Donald Armstrong, Jr. and Karla Rose Armstrong; granddaughter, Mandi Nyberg; parents, Frank and Jennie DePhillips; six brothers, Pete, Francis, Milo, Tony, Nick and Mike DePhillips; and one sister. Mary Rose Thomas.
