Margaret Smith, the eldest of four daughters of Gordon and Anna Miller Jones, was born June 28, 1921, in Beaver County, Okla. She died Aug. 5, 2016, in Penney Farms, Fla., at the age of 95.
On June 8, 1942, she married the love of her life, John W.V. Smith. He predeceased her in 1984 after 42 years of marriage.
She is survived by three children, Vernon (Paula), David (Brenda), and Robert (Connie); seven grandchildren, Courtney (Bryan) Kramer, Catherine (Christopher) Carter, Stephen (Rebecca), Richard, Jason (Courtney), Grant (Amy) and Gregory (Jennifer); eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great granddaughter. She is survived also by one sister, Irene (Ralph) Johnson, of San Marcos, Calif., and was predeceased by two sisters, Eunice (Phil) Rustin and Thelma (Paul) Whalen.
Margaret was a thoughtful, determined, high achieving leader and a loving and beloved mother. At age 16, she graduated high school as valedictorian, earned a BS from Northwestern Oklahoma University and an MA from Ball State University, where she also completed coursework toward a doctorate. She taught in public schools in Los Angeles, Calif., and Anderson, Ind., and at Warner Pacific College, Portland, Ore. She worked tirelessly for a better Indiana teachers' retirement program, finishing her career in 1981 as counselor at Anderson High School. In her retirement with John, she served as a missionary teacher in seminaries in Seoul, Korea; Bangkok, Thailand; Cochin, India and Trinidad, BWI. She also served as editor of the Church of the God MISSIONS magazine from 1986-87.
Margaret lived the past 24 years in Penney Retirement Community, Fla., where she served on the Board of Directors, was elected president of the PRC residents' association, and authored a history of PRC. She served on the Board of Area Agency on Aging of Northeast Florida, was president of Green Cove Kiwanis Club, was active in AAUW, League of Women Voters and AARP Widowed Person Services and Health Care Advocacy. She was honored as "Volunteer of the Year" for the State of Florida by LeadingAge Florida.
Her family was always the center of her life. She was known by every family member for her meaningful personal notes, never missing an important occasion, and for her wonderful cinnamon rolls and gingerbread cookies.
A celebration of her life will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Rozelle-Johnson Funeral Service, Anderson, Dr. Don Johnson officiating, with Dr. David Coolidge. Visitation will begin an hour before. Interment after at East Maplewood Cemetery.
A memorial service celebrating her service to and legacy for Penney Retirement Community, Fla., will be Oct. 22, 2016, at 10 a.m. at Memorial Church at PRC.
