A native of Jackson County, Mr. Cowan had resided in Buncombe County since 1981. He was a veteran of the Air Force and attended Western Carolina University. He was retired from Commercial Credit Finance after 37 years. He was the son of the late Dan Grady and Hattie Parker Cowan and was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Lou Howell.
Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Sheila Kirchberg Cowan of the home; sons, Danny L. Cowan Jr. and his wife, Lauren, of Asheville and Lee Cowan and his wife, Reetika, of Raleigh; daughter, Paige Cowan of Raleigh; sister, Elaine C. Sutton and her husband, Robert, of Asheville; and two grandsons, Parker and Conner Cowan.
A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Stillwell Cemetery with the Rev. Ray McCall officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Moody Funeral Home in Sylva.
