Obituary:
Mr. Leonard Kewanee Bell
Died at his home in Ashland, September 16th, after a lingering sickness, Leonard Kewanee Bell, aged 70 years, 4 months and 16 days.
Mr. Bell came to Nebraska in 1858 and settled on Salt Creek southwest of Ashland. In 1860 he was united in marriage to Miss Francis Sheffer. Four children were born to them, Lillian, Millie, Lulu, and Anna who died in infancy. They also received into their home the infant son of Mrs. Bell's sister, Nelson Bell, and were father and mother to him.
In his country's call for help in its hour of distress he rallied to its rescue and served until health failed, being First Lieutenant Co. K., 31st, Iowa Volunteer Infantry . In 1865 he became a charter member of the Church of Christ, organized as the result of the labor of the Rev. D. R. Dungan at the Sheffer home, but now known as the Greenwood church. He was also a charter member of the Church of Christ at Ashland, to which he was loyal until his death.
He was for many years in active business in Ashland in what was known as the Bell Grocery. Mr. Bell was greatly esteemed by all who knew him and will be sadly missed by the entire community.
Funeral services were held at his late home by Elder C A. Huyck, assisted by the Rev. J. A. Beatty of Lincoln and Rev. J. E. Cresmer, pastor of the Church of Christ. The floral tributes were beautiful and profuse. The casket was covered with cut flowers and ferns and there were several set pieces, among the number, two pillows, one presented by the G. A. R. and W. R. C., the other by the Church of Christ, and a beautiful white star, and a sickle of lavendar flowers, besides numerous bouquets of roses and other flowers, all around the room in which the casket was resting. The burial was in the Ashland cemetery.
