Depew Patrolman's Revolver Kills Son

Buffalo, Oct. 14, 1931. Earl Gainey, the 12-year-old son of Patrolman John Gainey of the Depew town police department, was shot and killed today by the accidental discharge of his father's revolver.

Earl and his brother, Ernest, were preparing for school and their father was getting ready to go on duty. His revolver, he told Police Chief Gus Kanehl, was hanging in his holster in his bedroom. Hearing the shot, the father ran into the bedroom and found Earl lying on the floor and Ernest holding the revolver. Ernest, who is 14 years old, was hysterical and incoherent, and investigating officers were unable to obtain a clear statement as to what occurred.

The shooting was ruled accidental after the investigation.

A very sad event that truly devastated an entire family.
