◙ ◙ ◙ ◙

Nancy Jane Appleby was born about May 2, 1834, probably near the town of Ira in Cayuga County, New York. She may have been the eldest of six children born to Isaac Appleby (1809–1875) and Elizabeth " Betsy" Southard (1813–1855).

We know little about Nancy's early life growing up on an upstate New York farm. She was about 20 years old when she married John D. Vanderheyden in Cayuga County, New York in 1854.

Nancy's mother died young in 1855 at the age of 42. Given that Nancy's parents and sisters reportedly also relocated to Illinois in about 1854, the entire extended family may have emigrated west together.

In 1858 Nancy and John had their only known child, a son they called 'Winn'.

Also in 1858, Nancy's 48-year-old widowed father returned to New York state to marry 32-year-old Maria Runyan Wilder, then he returned with his new bride to Illinois where the couple lived until they moved to Iowa in 1868. The couple gave Nancy four half-siblings.

In 1859 Nancy's sister, Clarinda, married John Vanderheyden's brother, Edward, further strengthening ties between the two families.

Nancy, John, and Winn lived in Jo Daviess County at least through 1880 according to census records.

In 1900 the census found John and Nancy living in Freedom Township in Carroll County. John listed his occupation as "land lord." Winn had married Emma Jane Eaton and had two children. Winn and his family lived on the adjacent farm property to Nancy and John.

Nancy died in 1902, evidently on her sixty-eighth birthday. Her mortal remains were laid to rest at the Arnold's Grove Cemetery near her home. The Vanderheyden family seemed to have no previous ties to this old Brethren cemetery.

John died at the age of 80 on November 18, 1911. His remains were buried next to Nancy's. A large red granite monument was added by family at some later date.
