DEATH OF MRS. HUGHES

Mrs. Amanda Maxwell Hughes, a former resident of this city died Saturday December 19th at her home in Palo Alto, Cal. Of her death the Palo Alto Times says:

"Mrs. Amanda Hughes, aged 92, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Julia R. Gilbert, 433 Melville avenue, at midnight Saturday and the funeral was held at the residence this forenoon, with interment following at Alta Mesa cemetery, Rev. Walter Hays conducted the services.

Mrs. Hughes had resided in Palo Alto for the past fifteen years, having come here in 1899 from [sic] her old home in Bloomington, Ind., the site of the state university. She was the widow of the late Rev. Levi Hughes, a Presbyterian minister of Bloomington, and was the mother of seven children, six of whom survive. They are Miss Elizabeth Hughes of the faculty of Castille's School, Mrs. Florence Hughes of the library staff of Stanford University, and another daughter residing in Dallas, Texas, a son residing in El Paso, Texas, and a son residing in Santa Fe, N.M.

Mrs. Hughes was a remarkable woman aside from the fact of her remarkable longevity and the retention of her faculties. She was perhaps one of the first members of a woman's [sic] club in America. She was one of the charter members of the Edgewortha'lian [sic] Society at Bloomfield, Ind., long, long ago and maintained interest all through her life in religious matters and the work that women are now united in doing throughout the country."
