Her mother was Elizabeth Pennington, and her father was Andrew Cope.

In the 1810 Census Report, her mother, Elizabeth Pennington, was 15 years old and living with her father, Abel Penningeon, in Knox County, Kentucky. Andrew Cope and his first wife, Sarah Wallace, and their three children, lived a few doors away.

Andrew Cope and 15-year-old Elizabeth Pennington had an affair, in early 1810, and their little daughter Elizabeth was born, in late 1810 (after the 1810 Census Report was taken).

Shortly after the child was born, Andrew and his family moved to White County, Tennessee, because of all the embarrassment.

Elizabeth's mother, Elizabeth Pennington, got married to Lewis Back, in 1812, and he adopted her little daughter Elizabeth and raised her as his own child. So her name became Elizabeth Back.
