Carl served as a Seaman Second Class, U.S.S. Quincy (CA-39), U.S. Navy during World War II.
He resided in Connecticut prior to the war.
Carl was declared "Missing In Action" when the Quincy, in what would be known as The Battle of Savo Island, was attacked by a large Japanese naval force and caught in the crossfire of Japanese ships Aoba, Furutaka, and Tenryū, and was hit heavily and set afire. The Quincy was then hit by two torpedoes from Tenryū, causing severe damage and eventually sank.
The Quincy had a total loss of 370 men dead and 167 wounded.
Carl was awarded the Purple Heart.
