MISSOURI VALLEY MAN DIES IN FIRE
RETIRED GROCER IS OVERCOME BY SMOKE

MISSOURI VALLEY ~~ S. E. (Ed) Purcell, 84, died here Thursday evening in a fire which damaged a tire shop and apartments in the business section. He apparently was overcome by smoke.

The body of the retired grocer was found in the hallway in front of his apartment door when firemen entered the building after fire broke out at 7 p.m.

"When we arrived at the scene there was so much smoke we couldn't tell where the fire was located. We broke out the windows and then entered, looking for Purcell, and found him on the floor," said Fireman John Watson Friday morning.

Use Two Trucks
Firemen, using two local trucks, fought the blaze until about 9 p.m., Watson reported. Fire and water damage in the brick and wood building at the corner of Second and Erie Streets was confined to the O. K. Tire Shop.

Also damaged by heavy smoke were several apartments in the building owned by Lee Kay, who also operated the tire shop. No estimate had been made
Friday of the total loss.

A second tenant was not at home when the fire broke.

Cause of the fire, which
Watson said, "broke out somewhere in the shop", was not known Friday.

Move Equipment
Equipment was moved from Anderson Cleaners, housed next door, during the blaze, when it was feared the fire might spread. Damage, however, was confined to the Kay Building, Watson said.

Purcell, who lived alone, is survived by three sons, J. S. of Missouri Valley, Peter of Detroit, and Rex of Cairo, Egypt; and three daughters, Mrs. Jeanette Ash and Mrs. Hazel Schoening of Omaha and Mrs. Verle Paulson of Chicago.

Funeral arrangements are pending with Hennessey-Van Cleave Funeral Home in charge.

S. E. PURCELL DIES IN FIRE
Ex-Grocer Overcome by Dense Smoke

Missouri Valley, Iowa ~~ S. E. (Ed) Purcell, 84, retired Missouri Valley grocer, died Thursday night in a fire which damaged a business and apartment building here.

Mr. Purcell was overcome by smoke as he tried to flee his second floor apartment. Firemen who tried to save him were hindered by the dense smoke. They had to don gas masks before they could enter the building.

Other tenants in the apartments -- Mrs. Lizzie Harvey and her children -- were out at the time the blaze started. Mr. Purcell lived alone.

The firs apparently started in a stairway leading to the apartments. It damaged the Lee Kay Tire Shop and Service Station on the first floor. Mr. Kay, owner of the building, blamed the fire on defective wiring. He said he carried no insurance.

Survivors: sons, J. S., Missouri Valley; Peter, Detroit, and Rex, Cairo, Egypt; daughters, Mrs. Jeanette Ash and Mrs. Hazel Schoening, Omaha, and Mrs. Verie Paulson, Chicago.
