Per his death certificate found on Ancestry.com: he was a son of W. E. Christmas, born in Kershaw Co., S. C., and Lottie E. Raines, born in Columbia, S. C., and the husband of Ouida Cleveland Christmas. He was a dentist. He resided at 1310 Clarendon St. in College Place and died there of "exact cause of death unknown, sudden death, probably heart attack or cerebral embolism." The informant was W. E. Christmas of College Place. Note: the DOD used for this memorial is that found on his death certificate which is in conflict with that on his grave marker.

Found in The State 28 December 1939: Dr. Leonard McFee Christmus, 24, of 1310 Clarendon street, College Place, died suddenly at his home at 9 o'clock yesterday morning. Funeral services will be conducted at 3 o'clock this afternoon from the Associate Reformed Presbyterian church of which he was a member. The Rev. R. C. Betts, his pastor will officiate and interment will be in Elmwood cemetery. Doctor Christmus, president of the Columbia Dental society, was educated in the schools of Columbia, was graduated from Columbia high school and attended the Atlanta Dental college in Atlanta, Ga. His untimely death cut short a career which was already showing great promise. He was held in high esteem by his colleagues as was indicated by the high office he held in the dental society. At the time of his death he was sitting at home conversing with his father-in-law, H. K. Cleveland of Atlanta. Doctor Christmus is survived by his widow, the former Ouida Cleveland of Atlanta; one daughter, Linda Kay Christmus, 15 months of age; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Christmus of Columbia; one sister, Mrs. Hugh Hutson of Jacksonville, Fla.; three brothers, W. E. Christmus, Jr. and Francis Christmus, both of Columbia, and Dr. R. E. Christmus of Manning; his father and mother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. H. K. Cleveland of Atlanta, Ga., his grandmother, Mrs. W. J. Christmus of Columbia, and several aunts and uncles.

Note: Leonard was married to Ouida Cleveland, daughter of Henry Keese Cleveland and Tincie Mae Stockton, both buried in Level Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Georgia.
