He married Mary Ann "Polly" Crase, on August 4, 1870. They lived in Magoffin County, and they had nine children. But Polly died, on May 1, 1911.

James got remarried to Margaret Dunn, seven months later, on October 18, 1911.

He later married Minerva Bailey, on December 7, 1918. She was known as "Minnie." They had two children: Green (born Oct. 3, 1919) and Goldie Mae (born April 15, 1921). James died in 1925, and Minnie died in 1926. Their two little children were raised by relatives, and by friends, including Grant Risner and his wife Cynthia, who lived in Morgan County, KY.
