Mary Elizabeth Sevier Throckmorton was the daughter of Major John Sevier and his second wife, Rebecca Sarah Richards, a well known beauty whose portrait can be found in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Major Sevier was the son of General John Sevier and his first wife, Sarah Hawkins Sevier. General Sevier was one of the brilliant strategists who refused to be intimidated by the threat issued by the brave, albeit foolish, Patrick Ferguson. Sevier led a contingent from the Watauga Settlement to a rural battlefield in South Carolina where the battle was a complete victory for the Patriots. Thomas Jefferson proclaimed the Battle of King's Mountain turned "the tide of success which terminated the Revolutionary War, with the seal of our independence." Later, General Sevier was elected as the first Governor of Tennessee.

On April 14, 1819, Mary Elizabeth Sevier married Joseph William Throckmorton, the son of Joseph Forman and Margaret Williams Throckmorton, and the grandson of his namesake, Joseph Throckmorton. The Daughters of the American Revolution designated the senior Joseph Throckmorton DAR Ancestor Number A115052 to honor his service in the Militia of New Jersey during the Revolutionary War.

When Joseph William Throckmorton was born in 1794, the Throckmorton family had been in the Colonies over a century. His third great grandfather, John Throckmorton, departed England aboard the ship, 'Lyon', and arrived in Massachusetts on February 5, 1631. Roger Williams, the founder of the Baptist faith in America, traveled on the same ship and the immigrants became friends.

Joseph William and Mary Throckmorton couple had several children. The list included:

William Richards Throckmorton
Anna Maria Throckmorton
Ellen Throckmorton
Joseph Forman Throckmorton
Rebecca Richards Throckmorton
Sarah Richards Throckmorton
