M. Burton (Bert) Clearwater, 94, of New Brighton passed away on Tuesday, July 26, 2016 at Brookdale Nursing Home in Smyrna, GA.


Melvin Burton Clearwater was born January 17, 1922 in Beaver Falls, to the late James Albert and Edith (Baker) Clearwater. He was a graduate of Beaver falls High School and Slippery Rock State College. He entered the Army Air Corps after high school in 1943 and in 1944 received a commission as a second lieutenant in the Army Air Corps as piolet instructor for WWII cadets.

After WWII, Bert enrolled in Slippery Rock College and received his teaching degree. He started his teaching profession in Conway and moved to New Brighton school district where he was an algebra teacher for 33 years. He received his Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Pittsburgh, while teaching in addition to continuing to serve as a pilot in the Air National Guard and Air Force Reserves for 28 years. We retired as a Lieutenant Colonel.

During his years as a New Brighton Junior and Senior High teacher he kept the time clock for the high school basketball and football games, and scoreboard for the baseball games.

He was involved in a number of local organizations over the years. Methodist’s Men’s Club, New Brighton Golf League, Senior Men’s Golf League, New Brighton Community Club, New Brighton Retired Men’s Club where he has a number of positions as treasurer. He was very active during the winter in St. Petersburg, FL with the Kid’s and the Kubs Senior Men’s Softball League that he joined in 1997. He was an active member playing in softball games up until 2015 at age 93. His team played two games against WWII veterans from both the US and Japanese teams in Hawaii to commemorate the anniversary of Pearl Harbor in 2011.

Bert’s Life began in Beaver Falls but spent the majority of his life in New Brighton where he met his wife Janet Louise Evans when preceded him in death in November 16, 1980. Bert and Janet are survived by their three children; Burton J. Clearwater, Des Moines, IA, Thomas E. Clearwater, Lake Tahoe, NV, and Lori E. Clearwater, Smyrna, GA.

In addition, he is survived by his grandchildren, Katie, Emily and Annie Clearwater (Tom), Jeremy, Taylor, Caleb, and Alec; two great-grandchildren, Arriana and Blair (Burt).

Friends will be received Friday from 2-7pm in the GABAUER-LUTTON FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION SERVICES, INC., 1117 Fifth Ave., Beaver Falls, www.gabauerluttonfuneralhome.com, where a service will take place Saturday at 10am. Reverend Scott Berkley will officiate.

Interment will follow at Grandview Cemetery.
