Donald Gerling
Donald Frank Gerling, 83, of rural Burlington, died Tuesday morning, March 22, 2005, at his home.
Born Aug. 22, 1921, in rural Burlington, he was the son of William and Nora Bernhardt Gerling. On Feb. 23, 1949, he married Charlotte Ellen Hartman in Galesburg, Ill. She died Jan. 27, 2001.
Mr. Gerling worked for the Des Moines County Road Commission and the Des Moines County Drainage District, retiring in 1986.
He was of the Methodist faith. He was a World War II Army veteran and a past member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and Disabled American Veterans. He attended his World War II buddies annual reunions. He loved to go mushroom hunting.
Survivors include three sons, David Gerling, Terry Gerling and Tim Gerling, all of rural Burlington; one daughter, Trina Gabeline of rural Burlington; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Everett Gerling of West Burlington and Leslie Gerling of Kingston; and one sister, Opal Shaffer of Mediapolis.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and two sisters.
Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. Thursday at Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.
The funeral for Mr. Gerling will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Lunning Chapel, with the Rev. Beth Briggs officiating. Burial will be in Long Creek Cemetery in rural Danville.
Memorials have been established for Mediapolis Ambulance and the Mediapolis Education Foundation.
