"MURDER CHARGE MADE AGAINST NEGRO DRIVER: Dock SNELLINGS Jailed After Alva SHUKAKER, 14, Dies in Accident on Macon Road Sunday. // DRUNKEN DRIVING BLAMED FOR TRAGEDY: Police Investigators Say Black Was Intoxicated. Youth's Mother and Brother Injured. // Alva SHUMAKER, 14, Upatoie youth, was killed late yesterday afternoon when the automobile in which he was riding overturned on the Macon road about 13 1/2 miles from Columbus. His skull was fractured and he died instantly, investigating officers said. // Dock SNELLINGS, Upatoie negro, who was driving the car, was jailed on a murder charge and is held in the county jail without bond. County officers said he was drunk at the time of the tragedy. // Mrs. Pamelia SHUMAKER and George H. SHUMAKER, 8, mother and brother of the dead boy, who were the other occupants of the car, were slightly injured, suffering minor bruises and lacerations, but both were able to return to their home near Upatoie after receiving first aid treatment at the hospital. // According to Assistant Chief D. W. McCARLEY of the county police, who with County Officers SATTERFIELD and YANCEY investigated the accident, the tragedy occurred shortly before six o'clock on a straight stretch of the Macon road about thirteen and a half miles from Columbus. // The officers learned from witnesses of the tragedy that the car driven by SNELLINGS, travelling at a speed estimated at about 35 miles an hour, veered sharply to the left, ran into a ditch along side the road and turned over on its side. The ditch was not more than 3 or 4 feet deep, the officers said. // Alva SHUMAKER was thrown from the car as it turned over and his head struck a log close to the roadside. His skull was badly fractured and he died almost instantly. // Assistant Chief McCARLEY quoted the negro driving as saying that the accident occurred when the steering wheel of the automobile locked, but the officer stated that SNELLINGS was so drunk as to be incapable of giving a connected account of the affair. // The automobile was the property of the negro, SNEELINGS [said], and Chief McCARLEY said that the black had come to Columbus to carry Mrs. SHUMAKER and her two sons home from a visit to Columbus. The stretch of road where the tragedy occurred is straight and smooth, and there is nothing to obstruct the view or to cause a driver to lose control of his machine the assistant stated. // Besides his mother and brother, Alva SHUMAKER is survived by his father E. H. SNELLINGS [sic - George Henry SHOEMAKER, Sr.]. // Following the accident ambulances were summoned from Columbus and Mrs. SHUMAKER and George [page break] SHUMAKER were carried to the hospital for first aid treatment. The body of Alva SHUMAKER was also carried to the hospital, but physicians said that he had died practically instantaneously. // The body was turned over to T. W. BRITTON undertaking establishment on Second avenue. Funeral services have not been arranged, and will be announced later. // Besides his mother and his brother, George, the dead youth is survived by his father, E. H. [sic - George Henry Sr.] SHUMAKER." [Columbus (GA) Enquirer-Sun newspaper, Monday, 03 JUN 1929, pp. 1 & 4.]
