Darrell Lee Hemphill, age 93, of Brownsville passed away on Monday, Nov. 6, 2006.

He was born in Swenson, Texas, in 1913 and graduated from Littlefield Texas High School. He received his undergraduate degree from West Texas State College in Canyon, Texas, where he earned a tennis scholarship. Darrell taught public junior high school for two years before attending law school at the University of Texas, where he graduated in 1942. Immediately after graduation, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and was honorably discharged with the rank of captain.

He again served on active duty in the United States Air Force from 1951-53 during the Korean War, where he served in the Judge Advo-cate General's Corps. In 1944, he married Ruth Park in Montgomery, Ala. They raised three children, Leanne Fazio (Michael) of Starkville, Mississippi, Andrew Darrell Hemphill of Dallas, Texas, and Paul Hemphill (Linda) of Brownsville, Texas. Ruth, predeceased Darrell in 1978. He is survived by three grandchildren, Daryl Fazio, Steven Fazio and Amy Hemphill.

Darrell practiced law in Brownsville for 45 years until his retire-ment in 1991. He was a Sunday school teacher for many years and served on the administrative board of the First United Methodist Church, Brownsville, and later was an active member of Central Christian Church in Brownsville.

In 1979, Darrell married Theola "Teddy" Hemphill, who predeceased him in 2001.

Darrell was a member of the Downtown Lions Club, Shriner, 32 degree Scottish Rite of Freemansons and a member of the John Hanson Post No. 43 of the American Legion. He served on the Brownsville Independent School District school board in the early 1960. Also, he served as Cameron County Republican Party chairman and was a Ronald Reagan delegate to the Republican Party National Convention in 1976.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2006, at the Central Christian Church 1100 E. Alton Gloor Blvd., Brownsville, Texas. Full military honors will be held under the direction of VFW Post 2035.

In lieu of flowers, family requests donations be made to Central Christian Church of Brownsville or the Rio Grande Valley Alzheimer's Chapter, Harlingen, Texas.
